Hiking in Roan Mountain

I went hiking in Roan Mountain, TN on Saturday. It's about an hour from Morganton, NC. It was a beautiful day, but quite chilly for mid July - 57 degrees and windy. Luckily, there was a jacket in the car. As I walked closer to the top of the mountain, I began hearing a strange humming noise. Bees? Flies? A UFO? No, just weed eaters. The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy was busy cleaning up Grassy Ridge. Not an easy job. They carried their tools over an hour (not an easy hike) to their workplace. There were children, parents, grandparents and lots of dogs.

After resting a while at the end of the trail, I headed back down. After walking about 10 minutes, I looked up and 5-6 feet in front of me stood a deer. He wasn't startled at all after seeing me. He just stared back, then slowly walked across the path. What a great day!

It has rained "cats and dogs" today here in Morganton, NC. Outside our office, it rained so hard that when the rain hit the ashpalt it actually started blowing uphill. I had never seen such a sight!

All the trees and grass are very green from the rain that we have already been sent from the heavens. Starla and I both remarked on how beautiful everything is, even though there is not a lot of blooming on the flowers yet. Green is my favorite color, so that might influence my opinion.

We are catching up on the rainfall that has been lacking for the last couple of years. Let's be thankful!

It's a great day in the neighborhood here in Morganton, NC. It turned sunny this afternoon, though rain is expected tonight and for the weekend. If you choose to look up, you can see a beautiful sky. It amazes me to see the different scenes that the sky can produce. I look out my window most evenings toward Table Rock Mountain and see blue sky with white fluffs like cotton candy, pale pink streaks, rosy colored hues, or glowing golden splashes moving behind a cloud. I often ask my husband, "Do you see the sky?" These beautiful colors don't appear for very long.

Sometimes the sky is grey and dreary looking. It seems to be trying to remind us that we have cares and problems in this world. Then I recall the old man who said, "If you don't have a problem, there is a good chance that someone has already preached your funeral."

Let's keep looking up and perhaps we will find another great day in the neighborhood.

Easter is almost here. Our office will be closed on Good Friday. The weather is great now after the cold spell, it is sunny and bright here in Morganton, NC. Just in time for the sunrise services and the celebration of Resurrection Sunday. Have a Great Weekend with family and friends!

Flat Stanley has come to Morganton, NC for a visit. He is on an adventure for my great neice, five-year old Brianna, from the Stout Memorial UMC Preschool in Parkersburg, WV. I brought him to work with me here at C. Ervin to help me answer the phone. Laura was already familiar with Flat Stanley and was very excited to see him.

I plan to take him to visit my son and daughter-in-law in Kernersville on Easter. He can also meet their new puppy, Ginger.

Here is a picture of Brianna and her friend on a school field trip to the firehouse.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Morganton, NC! I've been busy getting ready for tonight's festivities. We're having corned beef, lamb, colcannon, pickled beets, mashed turnips, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, rutabagas with caramelized onions, scones and bread pudding for dessert.

There have been several leprechaun sightings around town. Keep your eyes open, you never know where he's going to show up.

The weatherman says rain this weekend for Morganton, NC. He advised to plan to stay inside and snuggle up by the fireplace. The daffodils are blooming here. It won't be long until we have tulips and beautiful green lawns. All thanks to the gentle falling rain.

Burke County has been taken out of the extreme drought designation. We are thankful for all the rain our area has received lately. This is great news for farmers and ranchers in our area. Normal rainfall helps to stablize food prices.

Doug says the Henry River, which runs through his ranch, is running clear and deep.

Morganton was blessed with a beautiful snowfall last night. The children were out of school, of course. I discovered that kids aren't the only ones who experience snow for the first time. This puppy, named Ginger, saw her first snow. She had felt grass under her feet just a few months ago. She didn't know what to make of this strange white stuff.

The sun is shining brightly today here in Morganton, NC. If you are indoors, it can be a little deceptive. When you go outside, the cold air and wind takes you by surprise. Hopefully it will warm up later this afternoon so I can water our outdoor plants in front of the office without feeling guilty. Watering plants on a cold day seems harsh, but it needs to be done. It is colder than cold here in Morganton, NC. I stopped by the grocery store on my way to work and the young cashier said it was 11 degress when she came to work. I reminded her that at least the shine is shining and she could look out and see it while she works. No sun can be very depressing in the winter for people who need to stay at home. When I left the store, my car said it was 16 degrees. So the temp is coming up a little.

It is still sunny and cold here in Morganton today. We are thankful not to have the large snowfall that other states have. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a little snow. It will be even colder this weekend, so get out the coats and prepare to bundle up.
